September 12th, 2009 - Colne Barge Match
Melissa sailed form Pin Mill to Brightlingsea to compete in the Colne Barge Match. The match started at 8:00am Saturday morning and as soon as the starting gun fired Edme was in the lead. For Melissa the competition was large, white, and went by the name of Reminder. For the first half of the race Reminder was ahead. As we approached the outward mark the situation was changing and with some tactical tacking Melissa was round first. Luck was on our side and we crossed the finish line in second place behind Edme.

During the prize giving Gerald managed to drop the cup, look out for the picture below.

We also had on board Bill Rutland who, as a youngster, sailed on Melissa back in the 1960's.

August 22nd, 2009 - West Mersea Town Regatta
Melissa sailed down to West Mersea to act as the committee boat for the town regatta. This involved hosting the famous "Greasy Pole" that can be seen below.

July 18th, 2009 - Pin Mill Sailing Club 48th Annual Barge Match
After 15 years of refurbishment and only 2 weeks of sea trials Melissa entered the Pin Mill Sailing Club 48th Annual Barge Match skippered by Gerald Gadd and crewed by friends. She competed in the Class B Staysail race along side Arwinda, Decima (Melissa's sister barge), Phoenician, Reminder, Repertor, Wyvenhoe and Victor. The race started in a force 6 WNW wind and Melissa got off to a poor start. She was last to cross the start linee but by the time she reached Stone Banks buoy the crew were in full swing and Melissa was closing on her rivals. By the time she was in Harwich Harbour there was only Repertor left to catch and after some tactical manoeuvring by the skipper Melissa crossed the finish line with a clear lead of 24 seconds much to the pleasure of those on board.
